Pros and Cons of Choosing a Blackboard-Style Sandwich Board Sign

If you run a business and feel that a sandwich board sign outside of your location will be effective for drawing customers in, you'll need to decide whether to buy a custom-made sign or to simply buy a plain blackboard-style sign that you can write on with chalk. Many businesses opt for the latter, and there are several advantages and disadvantages to this idea. Here are some points for you to consider before you move forward with buying business signs for your company.

Pro: Ability to Change the Content

The major advantage of choosing a blackboard sign is that you can change the content as frequently as you'd like. If you run a business that has daily specials, you can write information to this effect on the sign before you place it on the sidewalk in front of your business and then wipe the sign clean at the end of the day so that you can write something new on it the next day.

Con: No Resistance to Rain

A challenge of having a blackboard sandwich board sign in front of your business is that if it begins to rain, the rain will wipe the chalk off the sign, leaving it blank and thus of little value. Of course, it's ideal if you're able to position the sign under an awning or some other type of overhead shelter that will help to prevent the rain from reaching it, but this may not always be possible for you in your location.

Pro: Inexpensive to Buy

If you're looking to keep your business' advertising costs on the lower side, a blackboard sandwich board sign can be more of a cost-effective choice than ordering a custom-designed sign. While it's true that a sign with a custom design can catch peoples' eyes and be resistant to the weather, it may also be an expense that you're not comfortable taking on — especially in the early days of your business.

Con: Prone to Vandalism

Blackboard-style sandwich board business signs are prone to vandalism, which can occur in a variety of ways. Someone who is walking past your sign could wipe out some of the words, making the sign illegible to would-be customers. It may be a while before you notice this problem and can correct it, which can be frustrating. A vandal with a piece of chalk could also write inappropriate words on the sign without you immediately knowing about it.
